Weingartner, (Paul) Felix

Weingartner, (Paul) Felix (1863-1942), Austrian conductor, whose interpretations of the music of Ludwig van Beethoven were considered among the finest of their time. Born in Zara, Dalmatia (now in Croatia), he studied in Leipzig and became a protégé of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. As conductor of the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic orchestras, he became known for a clear, economical style that clarified subtle detail within large structures. He composed in a variety of genres, edited the works of Hector Berlioz, and wrote several analytical treatises.
