Encyclopedia Article
Manuel II (1889-1932), last King of Portugal, born in Lisbon. He succeeded to the throne in 1908 during the troubled period after the assassination of his father, King Carlos, and his older brother, Crown Prince Louis. His reign lasted only until 1910, when a naval revolt caused him to flee, first to Gibraltar and then to England. Although he never officially abdicated, he made no effort to regain the throne.
