Legal Tender

Encyclopedia Article

Legal Tender, offer, usually of money, made in satisfaction of a debt or other liability and in accordance with requirements prescribed by law. The currency (that is, notes and coins) issued by the government is usually the legal tender of each country. Many other forms of payment may usually be acceptable—such as cheque payments or credit cards—but there is no legal obligation on an individual to accept payment in such form.
