Encyclopedia Article

Montgomeryshire, former county in central Wales; Welshpool was the administrative centre. Montgomeryshire comprised a largely mountainous area with the Severn Valley on the east along the English border. The county was formed in 1535, with borders similar to those of the 13th-century principality of Powys. In 1974 Montgomeryshire became part of the new county of Powys.
