Pohnpei, also known as Ponape, formerly Ascension Island (not to be confused with Ascension Island in the Atlantic), island in the Federated States of Micronesia, eastern Caroline Islands, western Pacific Ocean. It is a hilly, volcanic island, about 335 sq km (130 sq mi) in area, and is surrounded by barrier reefs that enclose smaller islands. Pohnpei has considerable fertile soil and its crops include coconuts, breadfruit, peppercorns, and taro. Kolonia is the capital of Pohnpei island state and the largest town on the island. Pohnpei was formerly in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which was administered by the United States. Population (1991) 33,346.
