Windows Live® Search Results Irwell (river), river in north-west England. It rises in the Pennines before draining into the Mersey via the Manchester Ship Canal. Manchester was built on the river's confluence with the Irk and the Medlock. However, the Irwell was not navigable and could not easily be canalized—the valley on its upper course was too narrow while its floodplain was not suitable to build on. Instead, it was used as a route and a water-source for other canals.
