Windows Live® Search Results Carlingford Lough, inlet of the Irish Sea on the north-eastern coast of Ireland, situated between the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland and the Carlingford Peninsula, which separates it from Dundalk Bay, in the Republic of Ireland. At the head of the lough is the Newry Canal, the earliest inland canal in the British Isles. Completed in 1742 to enable ships to navigate further inland, it is no longer used by commercial shipping.
