One of England's most ancient and extensive tracts of woodland, it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Since the Romans conquered the area, it has been an important source of coal and iron and has a rich industrial past. Even today coal is dug out from small pits by the descendants of medieval “Free Miners”, so called because they were given the right, by Royal decree over 700 years ago, to mine anywhere in the forest. The forest was made a royal hunting ground in medieval times. Today it is popular with walkers and cyclists. It covers 56 sq km (35 sq mi).
