Map of Vienna Province

Vienna Province, one of the nine provinces of Austria. Much of the province consists of the city of Vienna, which is the capital of Austria and the seat of the federal government.

The province is divided into 23 administrative districts. Each district has its own distinctive character. The inner city, on the west bank of the Danube, is the commercial and diplomatic quarter; the residential areas in the west of the province attract a wealthier population because of their rural character, wine production, and wooded hills. Industry is concentrated on the east bank of the Danube.

Although it is the smallest of Austria’s provinces, Vienna is the centre of the nation’s economy, employing a quarter of the country’s workforce. Employment is equally divided between the service and manufacturing sectors. Manufactured goods include food and drink, electrical goods, chemicals, metal products, and clothing. In the service sector, banking and administration are the main employers; Vienna is the headquarters of many large multinational companies.
