Windows Live® Search Results Upper Austria, one of Austria’s nine federal provinces. Upper Austria is crossed by the Danube, on which Linz, its capital and chief industrial centre, is situated. The land in the north is an undulating plateau and the south is alpine. Forests cover one-third of the land, but half is agricultural. Livestock farming is important, and crops grown include fruit, potatoes, rye, sugar beet, and wheat. Some salt and lignite (brown coal) are mined here.
