Orhan or Orchan (1281-1360), Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1326-1359). The second sultan, he succeeded his father, Osman. During his reign Orhan expanded the size of the empire, at the expense of the Byzantine Empire, by nearly five times, including taking control of the region of Ankara in 1354. This brought with it a requirement for an expanded administrative system, and Orhan established the system that put emphasis on tax raising and military matters. The first Ottoman coin was minted in 1326. Orhan was succeeded by his son, Murad I.
