Upper Lough ErneUpper Lough Erne

Upper Lough Erne, freshwater lake in County Fermanagh, south-west Northern Ireland. About 21 km (13 mi) long and 6.4 km (4 mi) wide, it is linked to Lower Lough Erne by a 16-km (10-mi) stretch of the River Erne. The basin of the lake is formed by an extensive limestone plateau, and it is covered with boulder clays and rocks. More than 90 islands and islets are on the lake. The lough supports a variety of ecosystems, including swamps, reed swamps, fens, and pastures. Many birds breed and overwinter there, including the whooper swan. The lough offers a variety of outdoor leisure activities, including sailing, boating, and fishing.
