cohort [ kṓ hawrt ] (plural cohorts)

Definition:
 
1. ancient hist unit of Roman army: an ancient Roman military unit equal to one tenth of a legion and consisting of 300 to 600 men

2. soldiers: a group of soldiers or warriors

3. group of people: a united group of people

4. supporter: a supporter, accomplice, or associate of a leader, especially one to whom special treatment and preference is given ( disapproving )

5. statistics group with statistical similarities: a group of people sharing a common factor such as the same age or the same income bracket, especially in a statistical survey

What is a cohort?

The common use of cohort to mean 'a united group of people' has given rise to a use in which a cohort is a single assistant or supporter: His most trusted cohort was an Englishman, David Hall (The Independent). This use is more common in US English.
