water chestnut (plural water chestnuts)

Definition:
 
1. crunchy nut-shaped corm: a round white crunchy stem base corm of a Chinese water plant, often used in Asian cooking. Water chestnuts are sometimes used in food manufacture to add crunchiness to processed foods.

2. Chinese plant with edible stem: a Chinese water plant that produces water chestnuts. Latin name Eleocharis tuberosa.

3. water plant: an annual water plant that forms rosettes of diamond-shaped floating leaves, has feathery underwater leaves, and bears hard spiny dark-grey fruit containing edible seeds. Native to: Europe, Asia.  Latin name Trapa natans.
