Encarta Answers | Spanish Civil War: Spanish Civil War erupted following a military uprising of right-wing groups against the reforms of the Second Republic. Rebel forces gained the upper hand when a mercenary army under General Francisco Franco marched on the capital, Madrid. Both fascist governments of Germany and Italy were involved as was the USSR on the Loyalist side. Volunteers around the world who opposed the fascist advance joined the Republican cause. After the war many Republicans went into exile. |
