September 11 Attacks:
On September 11, 2001, hijackers commandeered four airliners and crashed two into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York. A third airliner crashed into the Pentagon, while the fourth crashed into a field in Pittsburgh. In all, around 3,000 people died, including those aboard the airliners. The terrorists were later identified as members of the Al-Qaeda network controlled by Osama bin Laden, based in Afghanistan.
