Mycenae:
Ancient city, near the modern town of Minaiki, in the plain of Argolis, Greece, founded in the 16th century BC. With Troy, Tiryns, and Pylos (near modern Pílos), it was one of the principal cities of what was later known as Mycenaean culture, and is the most important Late Bronze Age city of the Greek mainland. It reached its height during the Late Bronze Age, gaining supremacy over the Minoans in c. 1400 BC, but declined after 1200 BC; destroyed by the Argives in 468 BC, it was never rebuilt.
