Battle of Britain:
Aerial conflict that was fought for control of the skies over Britain between German Luftwaffe and the Royal Air Force during World War II. The British made effective use of technical advances to counteract an enormous numerical disadvantage. British victory led to the cancellation of Adolf Hitler's plans to invade Britain and the Luftwaffe then proceeded to bomb British cities in the Blitz.
