Bay of Pigs Invasion:
Unsuccessful attempt made in 1961 by the US to overthrow the government of the Cuban revolutionary and premier Fidel Castro. On April 15, CIA pilots bombed and part of Castro’s air force, though they were prevented from completing the air strikes. On April 17, about 1,500 Cuban exiles, armed by the US, landed at the Bahía de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) on the south Cuban coast, but were driven back by Castro's forces. The failed invasion proved embarrassing for the Kennedy administration.
